ON

AURIGA è una costellazione sonora che nasce dall'unione di quattro musicisti che vivono e operano a Bologna. ON ha chiesto ad AURIGA di lavorare in dialogo con l'artista Nikola Uzunovsky al fine di realizzare un lavoro sonoro sotterraneo, nel parcheggio APCOA posizionato sotto Piazza VIII Agosto; l'opera è friuibile solo dalla superficie della piazza attraverso le griglie di aerazione che separano il sotto dal sopra.

L'idea era di creare un suono potente e compatto che, provenendo dal sottosuolo, si diffondesse nella piazza saturandola. Nel parcheggio sotterraneo l'aria era irrespirabile, impregnata di monossido di carbonio. Le auto andavano e venivano, continuamente. Faceva molto freddo. Avevamo a disposizione un impianto molto potente, 4 subwoofer e 4 satelliti, che sviluppavano una pressione sonora spessa e compatta. Si trattava di proiettare un suono denso, quasi tangibile, e di farlo filtrare attraverso le grate di aerazione che stavano sopra le nostre teste. Stabilimmo un range di frequenze all'interno del quale sintonizzare la nostra strumentazione; decidemmo di muoverci fra i 50 e 600 Hertz, la gamma mediobassa, e di spingere molto. In breve tempo le vibrazioni basse cominciarono a far scattare gli allarmi antifurto delle macchine parcheggiate, ognuna con un sibilo differente, su tonalità altissime. Era un effetto interessante. In superficie, sulla piazza di fronte alla sfera di Uzunovski, la gente, attratta dal suono, si radunava sulle grate e alcuni si appoggiavano sulla struttura metallica del camino, per meglio assorbire le vibrazioni provenienti dal sotterraneo. Questa situazione andò avanti per qualche ora, fino a che le esalazioni dei tubi di scappamento delle auto non divennero insopportabili provocandoci delle forti emicranie. Fu allora che smettemmo di suonare e tornammo in superficie e vedemmo la sfera di Uzunovski. Era di un colore giallo pallido, e sembrava che dovesse prendere il volo da un momento all'altro. AURIGA is a sound constellation born from the union of four musicians living and working in Bologna. ON asked AURIGA to collaborate with the visual artist Nikola Uzunovsky, in order to conceive a sound intervention in the underground APCOA car park of Piazza VIII Agosto. The sound could be perceived and heard only from the surface of the square, through the aeration system.

“We wanted a powerful and compact sound. A sound generated underground which would be diffused over the square. It was hard to breath in the car park, due to the carbon monoxide. Cars kept coming and going. It was cold. We had a powerful sound system, 4 subwoofer and 4 satellites, able to output a dense sound pressure. We wanted to project a dense sound, nearly palpable, and have it filtered by the vents above our heads. We set a range of frequencies to tune in our instruments; we decided for 50 and 600 Hertz, a low mid-range. After a while the vibrations triggered the alarms of the parked cars, each sounding with a different noise, all high-pitched. The effect was interesting. Above us, on the square, by Uzunovski’s work, people attracted by the sound would gather by the vent; someone even leaned on the metal structure, to absorb the vibration coming from the car park. We went on for a few hours, breathing till the gas became unbearable and started giving us migraines. Then we stopped playing and came over ground and saw Uzunovski’s sphere.
